Henri Castro established the city in 1844. Castro brought European families to his new city from the historical region of Alsace, France which is located along the Rhine river. Due to the number of settlers from Alsace, Castroville earned the nickname "The Little Alsace of Texas."Â The city is the current home of the Steinbach House which was originally built in Wahlbach, France. The house was built somewhere between 1618 and 1684 and was then relocated to Castroville in 1988.
