Speaking of tire rotations, we are discussing why good tires and tire rotations are so important to you and your vehicle's safety, so keep reading!

Why are good tires important?

The tires on your Dodge Challenger or Ram ProMaster are incredibly important. They serve as the contact between your vehicle and the road, transmitting braking and traction forces as well as changing and maintaining the direction the vehicle is headed. They also absorb road shocks and support the vehicle's load. When traveling from your home to the office, these functions are vital to getting there safely. If the road conditions are compromised or the weather isn't ideal, you don't have to have worn tires to worry about as well. In addition to traction, the amount of air in your tires can also impact your safety. If they are not properly inflated, your engine will work harder than necessary, your alignment can be off, and the tires will start to wear unevenly.

Why is getting your tires rotated important?

A tire rotation simply moves your tires to different positions on the vehicle. For example, technicians will take the rear left tire and move to the front right and the rear right tire to the front left. There are a variety of tire rotation combinations out there, however. These rotations are done in order to help the tires wear evenly, save you money, and extend the life of the tires. Even wear does extend the lifespan of your tires but it also is important for balanced handling when driving. If you drive a front-wheel-drive vehicle and skip a tire rotation, that may cause the front tires to wear down more than the rear tires, making it difficult to control the vehicle, especially if the roads are slick or unpaved.

How will I know if I need a new set of tires?

There are a few ways to easily check and see if you need a new set of tires. Up first, utilize the penny test! All you need is a penny that clearly shows President Lincoln's head. Place it into the middle of the tire tread and check to see if you can see the top of his head. If you cannot, your tires are good to go, if you can, however, it is time for some new tires. Whether your tires have good tread left or not, the age of your tires is also important in deciding whether or not you need a new set. Generally, manufacturers suggest that you change out your tires every ten years, but check your owner's manual.
